NATED Scotland

The first NATED Scotland event took place on Friday 4th December 2009. Hosted at the BRITE Centre, on the campus of Stevenson College in Edinburgh. NATED Scotland is open to all with an interest in improving the quality and range of provision for deaf students in Scotland, the launch event presented opportunities to…

  • Find out more about the benefits of NATED membership – the aims of NATED and the resources members can access
  • Shape the future of NATED – discuss the issues you feel need to be addressed and suggest professional development events you would find useful
  • Consider becoming a NATED committee member – actively contribute to the development of this exciting new group

We hope to take forward the plans from the Deaf Students Working Group to establish much better facilities in Scottish colleges and universities so that deaf students can progress more easily and have a wider range of access methods.

About NATED

What is NATED?

The National Association for Tertiary Education for Deaf people. Founded in 1976, it has been an active organisation made up of tutors of deaf students, Communication Support Workers and deaf students. Other professionals with an interest in improving access to further and higher education for deaf students are also welcome to join. The term “deaf students” includes students who use Sign Language, who are hard of hearing, deafened or deafblind.

What does NATED do?

It campaigns to improve access for deaf students to further and higher education in the UK. It supports staff who are doing this. It provides training and publications to support work with deaf students in post-16 education. To read more about the aims of NATED, click here

What is NATED Scotland?

It is a national sub group of the UK-wide NATED. We propose to launch NATED Scotland on Friday 4th December 2009 at the BRITE Centre, Edinburgh. The launch will start at 1.30pm. We expect members to come from other groups which have worked on similar issues, e.g. FACE and Deaf Students Working Group.

Why do we need NATED Scotland?

To give continuity to the work to support the development of access to colleges and universities for deaf students in Scotland. Working groups have a limited timespan and are also sometimes constrained by ties with government bodies. NATED is an independent charity. As a UK-wide organisation there are links in other parts of the UK which can be useful to draw on.

What do I get if I join NATED?

A regular NATED Newsbrief Magazine which will always have at least one page of news about Scotland.  The opportunity to go to networking meetings in Scotland and the rest of the UK. The chance to go to the annual conference which is an interesting training day. The opportunity to find out about the NATED assessment pack and to learn how to use it with students.

How much is it to join NATED Scotland?

To join NATED it is £15 per year for individuals or £100 for organisations. We prefer individual membership.

What plans does NATED Scotland have?

Come to the meeting on 4th December to discuss them!  We hope to take forward the plans from the Deaf Students Working Group to establish much better facilities in Scottish colleges and universities so that deaf students can progress more easily and have a wider range of access methods.
